Most free PDF sites upload your file to their servers, work on it there and send it back. PDF does the work inside your browser instead, with the open-source pdf.js and pdf-lib libraries. There is no server that could keep a copy.

Is there a free alternative to Smallpdf?
Yes. PDF does the jobs people use Smallpdf for most: merge, split, compress, rotate, delete and extract pages, JPG to PDF, PDF to JPG and page numbers. It is free with no daily limit, and it works in your browser, so your files are never uploaded.
Are my files uploaded?
No. PDF reads and writes your files inside your browser, on your device. They are never sent to a server, not to OpenApps and not to anyone else.
How do I compress a PDF without uploading it?
Open pdf-free.openapps.xyz/compress, drop the PDF and press Download PDF. Compress is set to Medium, which makes photos and scans smaller and keeps text sharp. Strong makes the file smaller still. PDF shows the new size when it is done.
Is PDF really free?
Yes. There is no paid plan, no daily limit, no watermark and no ads. Your device does the work, so PDF costs almost nothing to run.
Is there a file size limit?
No limit is set by PDF, and there is no limit on the number of files. The only limit is your device's memory: a laptop handles files of hundreds of megabytes, a phone somewhat less.
Can I merge PDFs and photos into one file?
Yes. Drop PDFs and JPG or PNG images together. Each image becomes a page, sized to A4, US Letter or the image itself, and you can put the pages in any order.
Can I turn PDF pages into JPG images?
Yes. Drop the PDF, choose Images, pick JPG or PNG and Standard (150 dpi) or High (300 dpi), then download the images one by one or as one zip. On a phone, Share sends them to your photos or another app.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in any modern browser on iPhone or Android. Tap pages to select them and press and hold a page to drag it. Compress, Split and Images are under Options.
What about password-protected PDFs?
PDF cannot change a locked file. Open it in a PDF reader with its password, save or print it as a new PDF, and add that copy.
Is anything lost when I merge or split?
Pages come out exactly as they were: text stays sharp and selectable, and links on the page keep working. Bookmarks and fillable form fields are not carried over to the new file. Compress changes only photos and scans.
Can it edit text, convert to Word or sign?
Not today. PDF does page jobs, compression and images. To get a PDF signed, use Sign, the free e-signature app in OpenApps.
Can my AI assistant use PDF?
PDF has no server API, because your files never reach a server. An assistant can send you a link that opens the right job, such as pdf-free.openapps.xyz/compress or pdf-free.openapps.xyz/split?ranges=1-3,4-9. See llms.txt.
